Ukraine’s president carries on persecuting his main political opponents
Former leaders of the Orange Revolution, one by one, fall victim of president Yanoukovitch's ambition to cement his hold on power before next year’s elections. His latest target is Yulia Tymoshenko, former primer minister; she faces charges of brokering an illegal gas deal with Russia during her term in office, and was arrested this week.
This makes economic integration with European Union an even more distant dream, as the bloc condemn the trials as being politically motivated. The president thereby ditches his campaign promises, and trades European help for the lure of autocracy. A not so juicy outcome could ensue for Yanoukovicth: Ukrainians are unlikely to remain passive witnesses.
